                                                                  FOUNDED 1899

A PERSONAL VIEW BY GEOFF SMITH FROM 1958 TO 1967.

FIRST CONTACT WITH CLUB NOVEMBER 1957.

It was a Sunday at the back end of October, I was riding with the Bradford social section of the CTC, we had just arrived at Hampswaite for "tea", when a large crowd of noisy cyclists entered the cafe, do you remember it, the cinema was in the grounds.

Well, I could not believe that's so many fit looking guys could all ride for one club, they did and it was the East Bradford Cycling Club.

I had my pint of tea and corned beef sandwich, and we set off to Bradford, it was dark and wet, but after about 10 miles at the Sun Inn, a big swish and 20 guys all peddling 59 fixed, saddle bags swinging in unison passed us.

I said to old Walter the club captain, "who was that", he said, THAT'S the East Bradford, the biggest and best club in the region.

I then said to him, I want to catch them and go back to Bradford with them, he said and I remember his words to this day, "well its been a pleasure to ride with you, but its time for you to move on, we will not ride again together" No ,I said I will be at the Shipley Post Office next Sunday, "no" he said, "you will be with your new club", and I was age 12.

                             1959 to 1964   golden years.

The era of the NCU and the BLRC had ended , now the BCF for road racing was in full swing. The club was a very died in the wood time trial club, RTTC,and for many years "testing" was the clubs strong point.

It was no wonder that all the news guys who joined the club were expected to ride all the club time trials and if you wanted, the events on local course i.e. "THE BORO." The club championships were hotly contested and the use of the 10 and 15 courses on the Otley-Harrogate road/pool triangle saw many a battle fought and lost. How many riders remember doing a U turn at the bottom of Rigton Lane on the now motorway standard road to Harrogate, not many I think. now just not thinkable.

The club 25's were held on 2 courses, the early season ones were run on the Acomb course, once again, riding through a housing estate and doing a "U" turn on a cart track 2 meters wide, yes we did it and I must say enjoyed it.

The end of season event was always on the "Top Boro", we started in a lay-by opposite the famous "RED WALL " at the end of the Knaresborough road, this course was thought to be one of the fastest in England and I and many others always had a feeling in ourselves that we were racing "on the Boro", that's is until you came to the GIBBET on the way back, many a sub hour ride has been washed away on this hill, not seconds but minutes in some cases, it needed a lot of energy to get back up to racing speed after this 10 mph climb..  lots  memories here.

Into this era came a big number of new young riders, who in the following years brought the club out of the dark "Testing "era into the modern all rounder club which it is today.

Here goes.

Geoff Smith, Dave Smith, Stuart Holdsworth, Stuart Ackroyd.Stuart Greenwood, Ian Sutcliffe, David Crosswaite,Paul Wildsmith,Paul Whitfield.Colin Hawkes.

WHO ARE THEY  WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Winter club run, where is it?..Its West End, now under water, they flooded it just after this picture was taken in about 1961/2.. Paul Whitfield, with back to us, Dav Smith throwing old stake, Geoff looking on, Ian Sutcliffe with hands on hips, also from right to left. Geoff Coles,Pete Lovel, Mick Foster and Sid Shawmarsh. Where are they now.

This is my first road race, March 1961 on the Rigton circuit, note old style jersey, bar end gear levers, universal centre pull brakes, and of coarse the PENNINE bike. You can see on the seat tube, a number of rings, we had all our Pennines done this way, later on around 1963/4, all the junior team had bright yellow paintwork, they were very special, due to the fact that, "Acker Smith" paid for all the frames to have the "Pennine" name hand painted on the tubes, plus the riders name. I wonder if there are any still about,I did know that Stuart Greenwood still had his a few years ago.

Talking of Acker Smith and Stuart Greenwood here they are at the Fallowfield track, note the old GB jersey,it was old team issue When I rode with a GB junior track team against Holland at Herne Hill we were issued with them and then told to keep them

Start of the East Bradford Road Race 1962, this was on the Rigton circuit, we are starting in the lay-by just before Pool paper mills, just beyond this lay-by the club 10's started. You can see Dav Smith Geoff Smith Stuart Holdsworth (obscured) Michael Sutcliffe,  , behind is John Ford on the left, he was the man to beat.  East Bradford won the team prize as usuall.Note old style jersey's, and NO crash hats.

Outside the Otley Rugby club rooms1964  after the Pennine Road Race on the Rigton Curcuit.  Geoff...Stu Ackroyd..Dav Smith...Stu  Holdsworth. The above never lost a team prize in any event which they rode.Note the new light blue jersey's against the old dark blue ones.

This is the EBCC Road team for 1963, you can see from the left  Gordan Hurst, Geoff Smith, Micheal Sutcliffe,we have just been riding the Junior Vaux Grand Prix near Newcastle, 1st again and as usual team award. Note new style club jersey's, and the bikes a bit more modern, The blue, red and white jersey is the colours of the BCF junior team which rode the Tour of Youth in Germany 3 weeks before, this was the fore-runner of the junior world championships, finished 9th. Note centre pull brakes and large flange hubs, usually Campagnolo. Real nice were the Campagnolo handlebar end gear changers, great for changing gear in the sprint.

Just a nice shot of Stuart Holdsworth on the old Bradford Track,

do you remember it.This  is a heat of the West Yorkshire pursuit championship, don't ask who beat Dave Benn of the Shipley Road Club in the final ??

Not all road bike , on mi trike at Braddon Bridge Isle of  Man 1961

Yes its that man again, little known fact, held 3 class b (big bike) British Motor paced records,

                                                                                    1/4 , 1/2 and 1 mile.

That's the great Jim Patterson, anyone who rode at Fallowfield kept out of way, or else.

                                                  THIS IS THE "RAKE"
